How can a heavy, clumsy, and frankly intimidating concrete shelter be transformed into a playful and inviting playground?

In recent years, the “International Fellowship of Christians and Jews” placed hundreds of these shelters (known in Hebrew as migunit) across Israel to address the urgent need for protection in public spaces. But after the events of October 7th, a new problem emerged.

In a survey conducted in the city of Sderot, children said they would rather run home than seek safety inside a migunit. The reason: traumatic experiences that took place in shelters during that day.

The Fellowship turned to us to propose solutions. Our idea was to reimagine the standard migunit as a real play structure: to neutralize its rigid shape, its heavy material presence, and its threatening associations.

We suggested keeping the clear protective function of the shelter on the ground floor, while adding an upper level for play: a loft where children can sit and enjoy a cool breeze, look out over the park, talk through an intercom with a friend waiting below, and even slide down.

The neighborhood children followed the entire on-site construction process with great curiosity, and were thrilled to inaugurate their new playground. Naturally, the structure complies with Israeli Standard 1498 for playground equipment.

Now, all that remains is to hope for peace — as soon as possible — for children everywhere.

איך הופכים מיגונית בטון כבדה, מגושמת ו… די מפחידה, למתקן משחק כיפי ומזמין? בשנים האחרונות “הקרן לידידות” - פיזרה מאות מיגוניות ברחבי הארץ, כדי לנסות ולפתור בעיות מיגון במרחב הציבורי. לאחר 7 באוקטובר נוצרה בעיה אחרת. בסקר שנערך, ילדי העיר שדרות אמרו שיעדיפו לרוץ הביתה מאשר להסתתר במיגונית, בגלל אירועי המיגוניות במהלך אותה שבת. הקרן לידידות פנתה אלינו כדי שנציע פתרונות. הרעיון היה להפוך מיגוניתרגילה למתקן משחק של ממש. לנטרל את הצורניות הנוקשה, את החומריות הכבדה, ואת הזיכרון המאיים. הצענו להשאיר את השימושיות הברורה של המיגונית בקומת הקרקע, וליצור עליית גג למשחק: אפשר לשבת וליהנות שם מבריזה קרירה , להשקיף על הגן, לדבר באינטרקום עם חברה שמחכה למטה, ולהתגלש. הילדים בגן עקבו בעניין אחרי תהליך הבנייה המורכב שנעה כולו בשטח, ושמחו מאד לחנוך את המתקן החדש, שעומד כמובן בדרישות התקן למתקני משחק 1498. נותר לנו רק לייחל לשלום, מהר ככל האפשר, לכל ילדי העולם.י
