One after the other, the conveyor belt delivers models of ordinary components used in urban restoration projects – structures, cars, signage, and street furniture. Onlookers can try to rearrange them to create a city restoration project of their own. The items that are of no interest can be discarded and returned to the conveyor belt only to return, slowly but surely, towards their past and future. Every choice is a good one – until the next ‘city planner’ comes along. The work brings up questions regarding the power of the planner in contrast with the power of the market and of reality, but also of the endless and often unavailing work that goes into urban planning. 

How should a city be renewed? Is there only one “correct” planner for the project? And how can we know that what we’re planning today will still be relevant 20, even 30 years down the road? 

The project won the ‘Awaken’ competition held by the Israeli Planning and Building Administration, and was presented at the United Nations 2016 Habitat III exhibition in Quito, Ecuador. It is slated to display in March 2017 at the Madatech in Haifa.
